Needles: what and where — systems, purposes, compatibility
A needle is a small but critically important element in sewing. The right needle ensures a smooth stitch, prevents skips, and does not damage the fabric. In this article, we will look at system of needles, them призначення та compatibility with machines and materials.
1. Needle systems
A needle system is its standard or type that corresponds to a particular type of sewing machine. The main systems are:
- 130/705 H — a standard system for household sewing machines (e.g., Janome, Brother, Singer).
- DBx1 (16×231) — for industrial direct-cutting machines.
- DCx27 / DCx1 — for overlockers and coverlockers.
- UY 128 GAS / UY 128 GBS — for industrial overlockers.
- Schmetz ELx705 — for coverlock and flat-lock machines.
2. Purpose of needles
Needles are classified not only by system, but also by tip type and thickness. This determines which materials they are compatible with:

| Quilting | For sewing multiple layers of fabric. |
| Microtex | For thin or very dense fabrics like silk or microfiber. |
3. Compatibility: how to choose the right one?
To avoid sewing problems, you should consider:
- Machine type: domestic or industrial? Choose the appropriate system.
- Cloth: light, elastic, thick or leather - depending on this, the shape of the tip is chosen.
- Thread thickness: for thick thread, use a needle with a larger eye.
- Needle size: standard from 60 to 120. The thicker the fabric, the higher the number.
